FAQs
How many square feet are in an acre?▼
There are 43,560 square feet in one acre. An acre is commonly used for measuring land in the US and UK.
What is the difference between a hectare and an acre?▼
A hectare is 10,000 square meters (about 2.47 acres), while an acre is 43,560 square feet (about 0.405 hectares). Hectares are used in the metric system.
How do I convert square meters to square feet?▼
Multiply square meters by 10.764 to get square feet. For example, 100 m² × 10.764 = 1,076.4 sq ft.
What is a square kilometer used for?▼
Square kilometers are used for measuring large areas like cities, countries, and geographical regions. One sq km equals 100 hectares or about 247 acres.
Land Units and the Squaring Problem
Area units divide neatly into two groups. The metric ones are defined from length and behave predictably. The traditional land measures come from agricultural practice, and several of them describe no fixed shape at all.
An acre is an area, not a shape
An acre is 43,560 square feet, and that oddly specific number is historical rather than designed. It approximated the land a team of oxen could plough in a day, which made it a measure of effort as much as of ground. Because it defines only an area, an acre can be any shape, and the common assumption that it's square is wrong. The traditional form was a long narrow strip, since turning a plough team was the slow part.
The hectare is the metric counterpart and is far easier to reason about: 10,000 square meters, which is exactly a square of one hundred meters on each side. A hectare is roughly two and a half acres, which is worth carrying as a rough check when reading land figures across systems.
Regional land units may have no single value
Several traditional units still in active use for land transactions vary by region rather than having one fixed definition. The bigha is the clearest example: its value differs substantially between states and districts, so a figure in bighas is meaningless without knowing where it was measured. Units such as the cent, guntha and kanal are similarly local in scope.
For anything with legal or financial weight, the safe practice is to record the area in square meters or square feet alongside the traditional figure, and to confirm which local definition was used. A conversion that silently assumes one regional value can be wrong by a wide margin.
Area grows with the square of length
Doubling the sides of a plot quadruples its area. This trips people up when scaling plans or estimating materials, because a room that's fifty percent larger in each direction needs more than twice the flooring, not fifty percent more.
It also means conversion factors for area are the squares of the corresponding length factors. A meter is about 3.28 feet, so a square meter is about 10.76 square feet rather than 3.28. Applying a length factor to an area is one of the most common conversion errors. The result is wrong by a factor large enough to notice only if you're checking.
