Your handle cannot use these fonts, your display name can

This is the platform-specific rule that catches most people out. X restricts the @handle to basic Latin letters, digits and the underscore, so styled Unicode simply cannot be used there. The field will reject it rather than display it incorrectly.

The display name above the handle has no such restriction, and neither do your bio, your location field, or the body of a post. That's why profiles appear to have a styled name: the decorated part is the display name, while the handle underneath stays plain. Anyone trying to style a handle is attempting something the platform doesn't permit, rather than doing it wrong.

Styled text spends your character allowance faster

Characters from the mathematical alphanumeric ranges sit outside the basic multilingual plane, and platforms frequently count them as more than one character against a limit. A post that looks comfortably short can therefore be rejected as too long, and the shortfall grows with how much of the text is styled.

The practical approach is to style a few words rather than a whole post, and to paste into the compose box to check the counter before committing to a format, rather than trusting the visible length.

Keep anything searchable in plain characters

Because styled text is built from substitute characters, it isn't the word it resembles. A hashtag written in a styled font doesn't join the normal hashtag, so it collects none of the traffic from that tag and effectively creates an orphan. The same applies to any term you want to be discoverable through search.

A workable division: keep hashtags, mentions, product names and keywords in ordinary characters, and reserve styling for a headline word or a visual separator. That way the post stays findable while still standing out in a feed.

Accessibility and the screen reader problem

X has a large audience using assistive technology, and styled Unicode is particularly poorly handled by it. A screen reader may announce styled letters individually, read them by their formal Unicode names, or skip them altogether. So a fully styled post can be unintelligible to a listener even though it looks fine on screen.

This is a stronger argument for restraint here than on more visual platforms, since the medium is primarily text. Styling a word or two remains readable when spoken. Styling an entire thread doesn't.
